Cha'alt After Dark Kickstarter

Ok, I'm finally opening up the Kickstarter for my Cha'alt After Dark collection of adventures.

Exactly what you've come to expect from Cha'alt - eldritch, gonzo, science-fantasy, post-apocalypse - but these scenarios are even sleazier!

Check it out here.

The first 2 adventures, Cha'alt After Dark and So Beautiful, So Dangerous, are already 90% written.  That's why I only did a 20-day crowdfunding campaign.

And once this KS has been fulfilled, I'm going all-in on the next edition of Encounter Critical (kickstarting that in August).

If you have any questions, suggestions, comments, or anything else, let me know.  Also, please share the Cha'alt After Dark Kickstarter campaign on social media.

Thanks,

NFT, Blockchains, Cryptocurrency, and Cha'alt

Welcome to the very first crypto-campaign setting... CHA'ALT!!!

Since they're numbered and finite, the gorgeous hardcover books for both Cha'alt and Cha'alt: Fuchsia Malaise are already unique, non-fungible tokens [NFTs] on a Blockchain.  Basically, collector items that will appreciate in value over time.

But instead of opening up an Ethereum wallet in the real world, I've decided to create a highly lucrative cryptocurrency storage facility in the eldritch, gonzo, science-fantasy, post-apocalyptic world of Cha'alt.  Cryptocurrency, such as Ethereum, was introduced into Cha'alt's economy by the Federation.  Specifically, Federation outlaws and criminal organizations.

Ethereum is traded throughout Cha'alt, above and below ground.  Currently, a signed and numbered hardcover Cha'alt book (either one) is worth 100 Ethereum or 100e.  At the moment, a single unit of Ethereum on Cha'alt is worth 93 talons (equal to 31 gold pieces or credits).  That's already a substantial amount, which is no surprise as the precious tomes have received their fair share of praise.

As the supply of books diminish, the value of Ethereum will increase - that's just basic economics.  The valuation formula is not open to the public, but investors can ask me about it privately: Venger.Satanis@yahoo.com

What can you do with the money?  Ethereum can be used to buy goods or services, like regular currency, not only on Cha'alt but all Federation controlled space.  Ethereum is tied to a real world individual (you), not Player-Characters.  That should be of particular interest to investors.

As a player, you can distribute Ethereum to one or more characters as you see fit via access crystal.  You receive 3 complimentary access crystals upon opening up your Ethereum account, which has automatically processed.  If you already own a hardcover Cha'alt book, then congratulations - you're already an investor!

Ethereum is recorded at the Cryptocurrency Storage Facility in A'agrybah (I've heard rumors that a subterranean branch has already been approved in the dark-elf city Ba'al-Tan).  Your Ethereum is accessible in-game with an access crystal.  If an access crystal is lost or stolen, even if the character who owns the access crystal dies, your Ethereum is safe.  The amount of Ethereum you own fluctuates when authorized individuals make in-game purchases with the cryptocurrency.

Purchases made with Ethereum are protected transdimensionally.  Let's say, you save up enough Ethereum to buy a starship so you can tool around the galaxy.  Even if that starship is blown-up in the campaign run by your current Game Master, the starship still exists somewhere in an alternate universe.  Given that there are nearly infinite dimensions, your starship should still be somewhere, even if finding its location may be a pain in the ass.

Of course, the number of hardcover Cha'alt books owned also changes the amount of Ethereum in your account.  FYI, another Kickstarter, Cha'alt After Dark, is coming June 10th, followed by a Kickstarter for book III, Cha'alt: Chartreuse Shadows, in January 2022.

As stated, the value of Ethereum can fluctuate.  On the 1st of every month, I'll make a blog post reflecting Ethereum's current value.  Generally speaking, the more books sold, the higher its value.  Does that mean the remaining few books will increase in price?  Well, if a single tweet or abstract digital drawing can be auctioned off for millions of dollars, anything's possible.

Months from now, I have no idea if the last dozen or so books will be sold for thousands of dollars or not, but the chances are good that prices could skyrocket, especially if the predicted hyperinflation comes to pass.

Last but not least, how do you order Cha'alt books?  Details right over here!

Happy speculating, hoss!!!

Stimulating Cha'alt

Another round of stimulus checks, and another chance to buy the limited edition, signed, hardcovers of both Cha'alt and Cha'alt: Fuchsia Malaise.

Kort'thalis Publishing is sure to garner at least a third of that 1.9 trillion dollars, right?

I bought back the 500 copies of Cha'alt that a friend helped me out with last year.  A good chunk of those were snatched up by Kickstarter backers, but I still have some left.

Cha'alt is $60 (includes USA shipping) + $20 to Canada or + $30 everywhere else in the world.

Cha'alt: Fuchsia Malaise is $60 (includes USA shipping) + $20 to Canada or + $30 everywhere else in the world.

Combined, both books are $100 + $30 to Canada and + $40 everywhere else in the world.

Send money via paypal.  My email is: Venger.Satanis@yahoo.com

All physical media automatically includes the corresponding PDF(s).  If you've already purchased the PDF, take $5 off the total price.

Thanks for your continued support!

Cha'alt Book 3 next year?

Ok, so the first two Cha'alt books turned out great.  The Kickstarters were both successful, and the quality is off the charts!

Next year... yes, I'm talking about 2022, I'd like to Kickstart the third Cha'alt book.  To the right, you can see a quick concept sketch for the Cha'alt: Chartreuse Shadows cover art.

It's a mish-mash of awesome stuff I've grown up with over the years... Beastmaster, Indiana Jones, Conan (sword), Lovecraftian tentacles, and hot fantasy ladies.  What do you think?

However, I've been reliably informed by my wife that until I get the 1,000 print run of Cha'alt: Fuchsia Malaise sold (200 of those already out the door), I can't move forward - except for commissioning the cover art, of course.

So, in the meantime, I'm launching an in-between Kickstarter to help sell Fuchsia Malaise books, as well as, one or more short PDF adventures set in the eldritch, gonzo, science-fantasy, post-apocalyptic campaign setting of Cha'alt.  The further we break stretch goal barriers, the more adventures will be released into backers' hands.

That KS has already been submitted for approval with a launch date of February 5th.  It'll run a full 30 days.  Should be pretty cool.  The more $ it makes, the better value backers will get.  I have many adventure ideas just waiting to be uncaged!

So, check back here for details.  If you have questions or suggestions, definitely let me know.

Spell Components in Cha'alt

I'm workshopping something new for my Cha'alt campaign, maybe it'll appear in the 3rd book next year... who knows?

At character creation, magic-using PCs must either choose or roll on the following random table to determine their fetishistic spell focus - a component which is part and parcel of their sorcery.

  1. Fire - any kind of flame or intense heat.
  2. Water - any of the three states of water (liquid, steam, or ice).
  3. Gold - self explanatory.
  4. Flesh - think: sex magic.
  5. Blood - ritual bloodletting and death.
  6. Crystal - any crystalline structure.
  7. Energy - high-tech power supplies.
  8. Emotional Turmoil - eliciting a powerful emotional response from one or more humanoids around you.

So, what are the pros and cons?
  • Casting without your spell component yields a 2 in 6 chance of spell failure.
  • Casting with a small or medium amount of your spell component just means that magic is cast normally.  Casting with a large amount of your spell component effectively doubles the potency of that spell.
  • The higher the spell level, the more component you need.  A 1st level spell might only require a single gold piece or "shot" from a blaster's energy-cell.  4th level spells may take a fist-sized crystal or consume a torch.

Keep in mind that when a particular component is used, it's entirely spent... water evaporates, crystal becomes dull rock, gold pieces turn to lead, and lifeforce is consumed.  This prevents sorcerers from using the same energy-cell to summon a demon over and over again.

Why bother doing this?  Well, it's just another thing to both keep players on their toes while creating interesting situations.  Could be fun... go ahead and give it a try!  And let me know the results.

If this seems to work, I could add more components.  Light, darkness, slime, who knows?  Feel free to suggest your own!

Cha'alt: Fuchsia Malaise Hardcovers

Yes, they are now for sale!

What am I talking about?  Part 2 of my eldritch, gonzo, science-fantasy, post-apocalyptic O5R (OSR and/or 5e) campaign setting that includes so many random tables, scenarios, seeds, and dungeons with original monsters and magic items that it's literally insane.

This is the original (part 1) Cha'alt.

And over here is the lurid hued sequel, Cha'alt: Fuchsia Malaise!

And now that I've got 99% of backer books in the mail, I can start selling them direct to those who missed out on the Kickstarter.  Don't bother asking about the Cha'alt hardcovers, they've sold out!

$60 for one book, $100 for two of them (includes shipping within the USA).  That comes with my signature and some personalization.  If this is going out of the country, then add $30 for shipping for one book and $40 for two (yeah, two is a better deal).

Keep in mind these luxury hardcovers (higher production value than anything Wizards has ever put out) are limited to a print run of 1,000 books.  When they're gone, they're gone!

Simply paypal me at Venger.Satanis@yahoo.com

You also get the PDF for free (but I'll need your DTRPG email address for that).  If you already have the PDF, simply request another PDF from Kort'thalis Publishing as a replacement.

Any questions, just email me.  Thanks for your continued support, hoss!

Friday Night Cha'alt on Roll20

Last Friday, the PCs encountered a snake-man king wandering the desert wastes of S'kbah.  Badly wounded, Hsss'ss was bleeding from a near mortal wound in his stomach.

Ready for a trap, the PCs eventually let their guard down, giving the serpentine humanoid water and healing.  In return, Hsss'ss told them of a pile of twisted metal just inside a cave not far from their present location.

The crashed starship was haunted by some luminous green spectre.  After a couple fruitless rounds of combat, one of the party's clerics banished the thing to another dimension.

After investigating and scavenging the ruined starship, the PCs encountered a couple of off-worlders who parked their sand-speeder just outside the cave.  The PCs gave the off-worlders an ass-whooping, stealing their gear and vehicle for their own use.

The next session is this Friday, December 11th @ 7:30pm - 9pm central standard time.  Yeah, 90 minutes!  The wife and kids are watching Mulan on Disney+, so I'm using the extra time for gaming.

This is the link.  First come, first serve.  Bring your A-game!

Friesens Fraud?

Friesens, the once reputable printing company from Canada has fallen in my eyes.

After printing and shipping a small print run of Cha'alt: Fuchsia Malaise, I noticed a few unexpected charges on the invoice.

I asked about them and was told the charges were incurred when I fixed a few problems with the files.  Problems that the printer had alerted me to and I corrected in a timely manner, within 24 hours.

In one case, Friesens had the appropriate file weeks before the proofs were sent, a file which they deleted and asked me to re-upload to make it easier for them.  The wrong file was uploaded (quite a bit of trial and error up to that point led to multiple files) and as soon as the error was noticed, I re-re-uploaded the correct file.

I talked to three people at Friesens and no one could satisfy my curiosity - why should I pay for additional fees when close-to-the-deadline mistakes were directly attributable to the printer?  They made other mistakes, too, such as losing the file for the cover's gold-embossed title.  Everything they asked of me, I did.  I busted my ass to make sure they had everything they needed ASAP.

And then, without warning, they included those (alleged by me) fraudulent charges in the invoice.

I even suggested a compromise where I'd pay roughly half these bogus fees in the name of good business, so we could all move forward.  I was told by Friesens' customer service manager that I should look for another printer in future.

Today, I paid for the legit costs of the print overrun (32 books) and nothing else.  As many of you know, I'm not the sort of person to just lay down and take it.  You invade Poland?  I mobilize the troops.  Appeasement is not in my nature.

I'll post more information as it becomes available.

Cha'alt: Fuchsia Malaise Hardcovers Arrived

An effulgent shard amidst the darkness...

Yes!  At long last, two pallets of gorgeous hardcovers arrived but an hour ago.

Looking them over, it's exactly what I wanted - a perfect compliment to Cha'alt.  The font is slightly larger, so for those with battle-weary eyes - you're welcome!

I'm putting up some pics that'll give you an idea.

And there's one thousand of them!  The first couple hundred go out to backers, the rest I'll sell out of my "Frazetta nymphs with Death Star looming in the background" van down by the river.  But that won't happen until I get books out to my wonderful backers.

If you want one, but didn't back the Kickstarter, check back around Xmas for ordering details.

For those who don't know, Cha'alt: Fuchsia Malaise is the follow-up to Cha'alt.  It's an eldritch, gonzo, science-fantasy, post-apocalypse campaign setting - chockfull of everything you'll need for running adventures of neo-quasi-O5R and vintage demon laser sleaze.  You're welcome again!!!

Cha'alt: Fuchsia Malaise took about a year from original idea and primordial playtesting to this point.

Thanks to everyone who supported me and pitched-in to make this awesome tome.  ;)

Check out the PDF!  It's on sale (50% off) until Thanksgiving.

Let's game!

Optimized PDF - Cha'alt: Fuchsia Malaise

I'm pleased to report the Cha'alt: Fuchsia Malaise PDF has been updated with bookmarks and hyperlinks.

Additionally, a few typos, layout inconsistencies, and various errors have been fixed.  Oh yeah, and the index has been added, too.

If you see anything amiss, please let me know.  The print files are going to be finalized soon, and I want the upcoming luxury hardcovers to be as close to perfect as possible (coming in October).

There's been a lot of great feedback, but I could always use a little more.  Definitely review Cha'alt: Fuchsia Malaise and talk it up on social media.

Thanks,

Cha'alt Play Report

I took time off from virtual gaming, like the entire lockdown.  That's 5 months.

Partly, this was because I was finishing up Cha'alt: Fuchsia Malaise.  The rest was due to my being mentally, emotionally, and physically exhausted... I've been running my very own in-home daycare (ages 3-9).

Flush with excitement from updating my transparent aluminum (so light weight and durable) O5R house-rules / hack of D&D known as Crimson Dragon Slayer (arcade-mode, bitches!), I ran a 90-minute one-shot of Cha'alt on Roll20.

A couple people dropped out because my way of running 5e isn't RAW enough for them, but we still had a decent party of 4 1/2 players (one guy was late and didn't quite get the hang of the chat until the very end).

The reason I like fast and dirty character creation is because I want to get playing.  And if you get killed, go ahead and think of a new guy and jump back in the next scene.  Everyone's time is valuable.  If I know you're playing a chaotic elf fighter named Gera'ald with a penchant for tentacle cow-tipping, that basically tells me all the mechanical and flavor junk I need to know as the GM.

The PCs had been wandering for a few hours before coming to a well-known landmark in the desert wasteland known as S'kbah.  The adventurers stood on the edge of a sarla'ak pit, it's gaping mouth wide and sun-burnt tentacles writhing hungrily.

20' above floated a hover-skiff containing a prisoner, two Federation guards, and a man wearing all-black.  It appeared that the prisoner was going to be executed very soon.

After some chit-chat with the Federation people, a PC (pixie-fairy thief) flew up and helped the prisoner get his hands free.  Fighting soon commenced.  Weirdly, two of the players chose clerics as characters but only a single healing spell was cast the entire game.  Hand-crossbows versus blasters, the PCs were taking heavy losses.  Feeling cocky, the man in black ignited a purple laser-sword and jumped down to engage the party's only fighter - a reptilian named Drak'thiss.

I missed every single attack with the man in black, so he eventually fell after the PCs flanking him both rolled a critical hit.  In the meantime, the prisoner had run off.

The survivors looted the bodies and started walking as night approached.  Replacement characters met up with the party and shortly after discovered the prisoner crawling on the sand, dehydrated and near death.

One PC helped him up and gave him water.  Everyone listened to the prisoner's promise of wealth and power if they kept him alive long enough to get off-world.  He mentioned the infamous black pyramid...

Two seconds later, another PC attempted to brain him with a mace.  He missed and the other PCs brushed it off with uncomfortable laughter, somehow unable to see the giant red flag being waved in front of their faces.  Next round, that same PC shot him point-blank in the head.

A couple of the other PCs complained about their comrade's rash action, but they didn't take up arms against him.  And then we were out of time.

While I'm running the game, I try not to judge.  I may slightly nudge adventurers in a certain direction from time to time, but ultimately it's their choice.

Now, that the game is over... well, let's just say mistakes were made.  Nothing was set in stone.  The scenario could have gone in one of a dozen different directions.  Next time I run the same scenario, it'll go a different way.  Always does.

If you choose to GM your own introduction to Cha'alt, feel free to use that (completely and utterly original start-point), and ask me for further information on the NPCs, possible future plans, etc.

p.s. I still have 40-something luxury Cha'alt hardcovers left.  Want one before they're gone?  Here ya go, hoss!

Infinite Healing

I considered titling this blog post "Whiny Baby Edition" but then who would be the whiny baby?  Me... or the few reviewers who incessantly complained about Crimson Dragon Slayer D20 having way too much clerical healing?  "Infinite healing" you might say, wrongly, of course, as I've discussed many, many times.

Let me cut to the chase - it's never happened to me in the dozens of games I've run, but it's possible for an adventuring party to abuse the lack of healing limitations imposed on clerics.  Well, I just fixed that.  Yep, re-wrote a whole entire god damned paragraph.  It's all for you, Damien!  Shemhamforash!!!

What's the rule change?  Similar to something I came up with in a prior edition of Crimson Dragon Slayer.  If the healing die comes up 1, the cleric is temporarily exhausted (in the spiritual sense) and unable to heal anyone for the next 10 - 40 minutes (1d4 turns).  That's it.  Not much, but it's enough of a speed-bump to pacify those 2 or 3 dudes still shouting their disapproval.

See?  I do occasionally listen to critics, and happen to think this is a fair compromise for everybody.  Now, I fully expect Crimson Dragon Slayer D20 to soar past D&D 5e in popularity, as it's less crunchy, more old school, and extremely flavorful with a sword & sorcery vibe you don't get with mainstream rule-sets.  It was, after all, made with the Cha'alt campaign setting in mind.

And this change will be carried over into Cha'alt: Fuchsia Malaise... as soon as the layout team have finished making all the other little tweaks I've compiled over the last week (3 or 4 more days?).

Cha'alt: Fuchsia Malaise became a "Best SILVER Seller" just a couple days ago, so thank you all for continuing to support my warped, pop-culture infused, eldritch, gonzo, science-fantasy, post-apocalyptic vision!

Oh yeah, there are a couple standout reviews I should link to... here and here.

I actually ran a Cha'alt / Crimson Dragon Slayer one-shot on Roll20 last night (first time in about 5 months).  I'll blog a play report in the next day or two.

Fuchsia Lives Matter

Want to know who's actually oppressed and faces systemic racism in 2020?

Look no further than the citizens of Cha'alt.  Yes, real slavery and genocide while their planet's zoth is stolen.

Off-worlders think nothing of shooting a sky-elf in the face.  It's legal, so why not?  The desert is silent, but you don't have to be.

Do your part by posting a fuchsia square on your social media with the hashtag #FuchsiaLivesMatter

We need change now!  Do some good for the people of Cha'alt... even if their skin color is fuchsia.  Their lives matter just as much as citizens of the Federation.

Thank you,

Cha'alt: Fuchsia Malaise

Yesssss!  It's out.  GET IT HERE.

This isn't the tippy-top final version, mind you.  But it's farther along than a beta.  The bookmarks, hyperlinks, and index is coming soon.  Also, I'll be spotting and fixing typos over the next couple weeks.

What's in it?  So much, dude.  So much.  225 pages of the awesomeness you've gotten to know from Cha'alt.  Some of that page count is previously released PDFs, such as OSR Like A Fucking Boss.  That'll be in the fancy hardcover edition coming out this fall, so I wanted to include it in the PDF, as well.  Everything in one place for convenience.

It took me almost a year to create Cha'alt: Fuchsia Malaise.  It's jam-packed with gameable content.  Some stuff you're probably expecting... the rest out of left-field.

I'm hoping to get some promotional boost from DriveThru, that's why it's ridiculously priced at $5.  If you'd like to help out, blog about it, mention it on social media, or maybe write a review.

Thanks,

Interviews With The Za'akier

I've been fortunate enough to be interviewed TWICE this past week.

I'm linking to both here on my blog.  This is the first and here is the second.

As for Cha'alt: Fuchsia Malaise, the PDF release has been slightly delayed.  We're trying to get the layout just right and there's some reinventing the wheel since Glynn Seal of MonkeyBlood Design and I are no longer working together.

Obviously, the whole pandemic / lockdown didn't help the schedule.  My writing slowed a bit with having to stay at home.  5 kids isn't the same as a nice quiet office.

But it's not all setbacks, I think this second book will be easier to read (less going on in the background behind the text and slightly larger text).  Plus, new little flourishes that should delight readers.  David Guyll and his wife Melissa have made tremendous progress over the last few weeks.

Anyways, I'm hoping the PDF will be ready by next weekend.  We're trying to get it as close to perfect as we can, so that deadline is not set in stone.

Cover Art for Cha'alt: Fuchsia Malaise

In a couple weeks, I hope to have Cha'alt: Fuchsia Malaise uploaded onto DriveThruRPG.  Then you'll see what I've been working on for nearly an entire year.

Here's the cover art by Monstark.  He does outstanding work!

Briefly, Cha'alt: Fuchsia Malaise goes deeper into the campaign setting of Cha'alt.  It provides GM tools for running the game (so many random tables!), exploring cities like A'agrybah, the desert wasteland, and various "dungeons" throughout the world... such as the offworlder complex Elysium.

If you enjoyed Cha'alt, you'll enjoy this.  If you preferred the rest of the setting outside The Black Pyramid, then you'll really love Cha'alt: Fuchsia Malaise.

Stay tuned,

VS
