Karen Tenkar Gets Offended

 

What in the world?

So, I'm checking in on Tenkar's... sorry, I mean Karen's Tavern when I see this post about a DriveThru product with a dumb pseudo-political message at the bottom of the product description.

Apparently, Erik was offended enough by "All Cops Are Bastards" to email DriveThru with a complaint.  Later that day, the product was nuked from orbit.

Now, I'm not a fan of ACAB or much of anything coming from the Antifa, BLM, and rioting leftist area of the culture.  But I'm not going to complain, I'm not going to say it shouldn't be there, I'm not going to suggest that products with offensive slogans (political or not) should be removed from shelves (virtual or not).

Last time I checked, this was a free fucking country.  The category of "offensive speech" like "hate speech" doesn't exist.  It's made-up.  But you know what's not make-believe?  Cancel culture.  It's as real as a heart attack, and people like you and me are living on its edge.  We're just one bad tweet away from disintegration, my friend.  And the pathetic pearl-clutching authoritarians and losers who believe in such things are only doing it for control.  

Part of the reason why I wouldn't want "All Cops Are Bastards" to be censored, other than the fact that it's none of my god damned business, is because it's a slippery slope.  

I also wouldn't want products or product descriptions with "Jeffery Epstein Didn't Kill Himself" taken down... or "Black Lives Matter" or "Blue Lives Matter" or "All Lives Matter" or "Social Justice Warriors Need Not Apply" or "Jesus Saves" or "Hail Cthulhu" or "Vote In November" or  "Don't Tread On Me" or "I Love The USA" or "Babies Are People, Too.  Don't Murder Them."

It's 2020.  I don't have to tell you that things are pretty crazy.  Let's not make things worse intentionally by calling out every little thing that might not fit the status-quo or our own personal views of what might be safe or proper or appropriate.  Who knows, maybe we need to get a little problematic in order to right the ship?

While Karen is asking the clerk if she can speak to the manager, I hope the rest of us can go about our daily lives without succumbing to the desire to crush everything that isn't exactly tailored specifically to us.

We're individuals without the need for safe spaces.  Our sensibilities aren't that delicate.

Your Virtue Has Now Been Signaled

As you might have heard, someone on the internet said something stupid and prejudiced.  I know, shock and horror!  How could this be?

Did I mention this is the internet?  Stupid and prejudiced is kind of the internet's brand.

Specifically, Bob Bledsaw II wrote something nasty about Jews and also that black music appropriated by Elvis is pretty good.

I don't know him, but I've heard of him.  And, of course, I know of Judge's Guild, but I've never used their products.  If there's no chance of it having come from an LSD fever-dream, I'm just not interested.

Predictably, many are coming out of the woodwork to condemn what he said.  That's fine.  I condemn it, too.  Just like when I condemn it from the mouths or twitter accounts of Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and similar progressives.

But what came as a surprise is this - it wasn't the radical left or woke police or social justice warriors who are trying to "out" this old guy as a horrible bigot who must be shunned without any means of supporting himself or his family.  No, it was the neutral-ground fence-sitters, the moderates, the centrists, mild mannered conservatives, and those who don't want to get involved in politics.

Just a year ago, a popular OSR bartender disowned probably the only trans-person he's ever been in close contact with.  And I've received cold stares and silence from many quarters of the community.  But I'm not going to stop being me, just as I'm not going to stop pointing out hypocrisy. 

So, what have we learned from our moral superiors, the political leftists who've tried to deplatform, demonetize, and cancel everyone that deviates from woke scripture, anyone who doesn't pass the litmus test of egalitarian brother and sisterhood, all who stand in the way of intersectional workers of the world uniting?

That it's better to accuse and punish others than to look inward and try make better choices for ourselves.

You change views by discussing them openly, not beating people over the head merely for holding them.

And then you get comments like anti-semitism is merely talking to their OSR base or that President Trump ushered in a new era of racism, anti-semitism, sexism, homo and trans-phobia, etc.  That, too, is bullshit.  Trump has been more pro-Jew and pro-Israel than any President in memory.

I honestly thought we were better than that.  We don't need to virtue signal because, as we all know, that currency is vastly over-inflated, its stock doomed to plummet until 1,000 digital back-pats can only afford you a crust of Democratic Socialist bread.

If you want to stop buying this product or stop promoting that designer, more power to you.  It's a free country, you can do what you want with your dollars and time.  Just don't ask me to sign my name to some blacklist or join the outrage mob or help you force some dude with a terrible worldview from attending an RPG convention.

Stuck In The Middle

I read this Tenkar's Tavern post yesterday, but this is my first opportunity to respond.

Yeah, the middlemen get squeezed.  Those seeking neutral ground will eventually see themselves taking up less and less space.  And that's a shame.  Because politics shouldn't intrude on everything... especially a leisure pursuit like roleplaying games.

To be clear, I'm also a moderate, a centrist, a classical liberal who'd rather not get involved in the culture wars of increasing polarization.  But it wasn't so long ago that free speech, rationality, the rule of law, and focusing on gaming were nonpartisan issues that everyone could agree on.

That is not what's happened over the last 3 or 4 years.  Social media is everything and everything has been influenced (corrupted?) by politics.  The more radical, the better... according to the loudest and least compromising among us.

Any clearheaded person can see that Erik Tenkar contributes to the RPG HIC (Hobby/Industry/Community).  And Pex, as Erik's mouthpiece, has every right to post links to whatever the Tavern is talking about at the moment.  Those SJWs over on Discord can believe what they want... because they're creating a reality all their own.

If Erik and Pex hadn't distanced themselves from me, I'd be there to fight alongside them.  But instead, they chose to throw the baby out with the bathwater and are now being ostracized within certain segments of the HIC because not enough babies were thrown.  Yes, also a subtle jab at post-birth abortions that's now part of mainstream Democrat policy!

Hoist on their own petard.  Sad, but not unexpected.  Live together or die alone, as Lost so eloquently stated.  Meanwhile, I'll be here patiently waiting for my apologies.  Fighting the good fight.  Designing games and doing my za'akier thing.

Good luck to everyone who wants to stay on the sidelines, where it's "safe," and go about their business without getting involved.  Eventually, you too will be swept up in the mob.  Wake up before you suddenly find your head upon the guillotine of social justice!

What's the opposite of humble?

I had intended to stay quiet about everything I know, but this post here on Tenkar's Tavern was, I suppose, the straw that broke the camel's back.

Or maybe because it's almost St. Paddy's Day and the Irish in me just won't let it go.

As much as anything, this blog post is a warning against centralized power, its corrupting nature, cults of personality, and the slippery slope of authoritarianism (yet I hope to keep this apolitical).

Now that I re-read this, it's really long, but I wanted to provide as much as possible so people wouldn't respond with "But, but sour grapes and stuff..."  Yes, some of my interactions left me with bitter feelings, but this is not retaliation for a few slights.  Rather, I want to shine a light on a very public figure before he becomes "too big to fail."  This is to open discussion while it's still feasible to critique the Tenkar Empire without disastrous reprisal.

A little backstory, I've known Erik Tenkar for years, since I started blogging and writing OSR stuff back in 2014.  He was a prolific and well known blogger in those days and his power and recognition has steadily grown since then.

For awhile, Erik and I didn't get along.  But then we kind of got over that and became the kind of friends that's really more like online acquaintances.  He helped me out with promoting various projects, and I tried to show him the same consideration and loyalty (like defending him against Facebook attacks from Stacey and company).

There were isolated moments, like when someone would mention Erik's name in a g+ thread, saying it would be nice if he'd blog about whatever they were kickstarting or selling, but didn't tag him, and he'd find out about it and angrily blog about people who think they're owed.

Looking back, that kind of thing was a trademark of Zak S.  You'd mention his name in passing, and if it was anything but a glowing endorsement, he'd find out about it and criticize you or defend himself by clutching his "tavern keeper beyond reproach" pearls. 

Or when I commented on his blog post with less than complimentary remarks, like Frog God Games virtually giving their old Pathfinder compatible stock away at a convention... those comments either never made their way to his blog or were deleted without comment.

Not too long ago, I asked if I could guest post on his blog, which he regularly encouraged.  He said sure, but when I sent him the content, there was zero response and it never appeared.  That I can sort of understand, because it was a little risque, having to do with Alpha Blue and legalized brothels in Nevada.  Nevertheless, an email saying, "Sorry, that's too much." would have been nice.

And then there's the proposed OSR answer to the ENnies. Erik brought me into discussion and even asked me to be one of three judges.  It was going to be Erik, one of the Spahn guys (I think) and myself.  The OSR was going to have its own annual award.  After several back and forth emails, it was suddenly dropped.  I have no idea why.  I asked, and got no reply.  I assume it was because several OSR products were actually up for an ENnie award that year and a separate OSR award would seem redundant, but I'm still in the dark about those details.

As many of you know, Erik expanded his empire from blogging to podcasting and becoming a Discord fan.  He and his helper, Pex, asked me to join.  They created a channel or sub-section or whatever for Kort'thalis Publishing even before I could say yes.  That kind of reminded me of the whole U2 and itunes debacle, but I didn't want to make a fuss.  Ok, fine, I said.

Pex in particular would gently remind me on a regular basis to keep posting into the Discord void, so I did, even though it seemed no one was listening and I just didn't like the Discord format.  In fact, I was so impressed with Pex's constant encouragement (eventually, it probably would have seemed like nagging, but maybe that's because I've been married for 7 years), that I asked if he'd be interested in working for Kort'thalis Publishing.  He said yes after we negotiated compensation.

A short while later, I released my transhumanist blog post.  It was a day or two before I could respond to anything because of my usual busy family life. 

Basically, I was booted from Tenkar's Discord machine and Pex told me he wanted nothing more to do with me.

I received an email from Tenkar. The subject line was "Man did you step in it."  In the email he states that he wasn't sure what my intent was, but that "flames were spreading" and there was a decision made to remove my publisher's channel."

Despite a few people coming to my defense and calling Erik "transphobic," I attempted to inform Erik on what was going on, why I posted it, etc.

He derisively responded with "Thanks for your concern. If I have something to say, You know where to read it".

I mentioned what had been happening on Twitter, and again one of Erik's spies reported the news back to him where he passive-aggressively responded in an email the following...

Twice on Twitter you claimed you were "kicked off" or expelled from The Tavern's Discord Server. Both times you were incorrect. Your Publisher's Channel was removed (as you were informed of) but you were still a member of the server. Since you desire to be removed from the server (based upon your own claims) we have now removed your membership from the server as you have indirectly requested.

I responded by asking why I'd want to stay somewhere I was clearly unwelcome?  And that he was effectively exiling me from the Tenkar Empire.  I haven't spoken to him since (but seeing him at GaryCon might be awkward).

Before the whole transhuman blog post, Tenkar had mentioned his support of my upcoming Cha'alt project.  Said that he looked forward to seeing more and talking about it on the various places where he discusses RPG matters.

I never bothered to ask for his support when the kickstarter went live, weeks after the za'akier post.  Partly because I was confident he'd refuse, but also because I didn't want the backing of someone like that, someone who turns his back on a friend because of some ruffled internet feathers, someone who purports to be an ivory pillar of virtue and integrity, but when it really comes down to it is no better or worse than the rest of us. 

Erik, if you had taken money in exchange for mentioning products, that would be a lot less shady than what I've seen from you thus far. 

At least I admit that I'm just an old school smut-peddler who's just as easy to corrupt as the next guy. Sure, I can be a dick sometimes.  I also like to poke fun at sacred cows.  Hell, that's why I've taken Satanis as part of my name.  I'm down here in the dirt - below the dirt, actually; where the dungeons are... bedrock.  Hell itself!  I don't fire back at gamers with "How dare you, sir? I'm a humble bartender and have the utmost reputation!" pretentious twaddle. 

Erik, get over yourself.  The majority of people who've claimed that you have harassed them, most likely deserve it (deadbeat KS people, Stacey, etc.).  But also know that you're presence is intimidating to regular folks, too.  I, myself, hesitated before writing this because of who you are (OSR Emperor, Frog God representative, ex-cop, etc.), but I wouldn't be able to sleep at night if I stayed silent.

To Erik's audience, I say this: Be careful of idolatry.  The neutral ground of today may become the golden calf of tomorrow...

Throwing Down the Space Gauntlet

[This challenge is off the table; however, this one is just getting started.]

Geek drama.  It happens.  Recently, I said some stuff and Erik from Tenkar's Tavern said some other stuff.  Apparently, both sides want to keep fighting...

However, I say we settle this like gamers.  +Erik Tenkar, I'm officially throwing down the space gauntlet in the form of a home-brew random table challenge!


The Rules

Each of us will create a new d12 table within one week - Sunday, January 17th at noon (central standard time).  Erik's random table will be suitable for White Star while mine (Venger's) will be for Alpha Blue.  Both suitable for old school, sci-fi, space opera adventuring!

The tables will be posted on my blog Sunday night and may also be posted at Tenkar's Tavern, if Erik wishes.

Winners and losers will be decided in the hearts and minds of all those who gaze upon our tables.  There's no prize or humiliating task to perform.  This is for personal honor and to, hopefully, bury the star axe before things escalate any further.

The tables will be judged on the following three merits:

1. Science fiction simulation/emulation
2. Awesomeness
3. Usability 

If Erik refuses my challenge (which is a distinct possibility), someone else can take up his laser sword, fighting for Tenkar's Tavern via the White Star RPG.  To decide who may take his place, assuming Erik declines, I'll roll a d6 for the first six people to ask for the privilege in a comment below.

Erik, you have until midnight tomorrow - Monday, January 11th to accept my challenge or forfeit your chance to compete against me via the Alpha Blue RPG.  I'm sure you will be a worthy adversary.

This is getting damn petty now, and I no intention of getting in a penis-measuring contest where you're setting the rules. If you want to do that, let's compare blog view counts or Alexa ranking. Or if you really want to compare White Star versus Alpha Blue, just compare sales numbers. Which one of them is a Gold seller again?

Beyond the OSR

Yesterday, Tenkar's Tavern asked what non-D&D derived OSR game were people hankering to play.

Just out of curiosity, I'm wondering what non-OSR game you'd love to one-shot if it could be anything at all.  Maybe it's something you got to play once or twice decades ago or something cool you've seen advertised online.  What would it be and why?

Old School... something or other

Funny, I was thinking of the topic for this blog post halfway through my vacation.  Then I get back and read Tenkar's Tavern and RPGPundit's blog to find out they're talking about something similar.  But let's not put the horse before the cart, guys.

For a few weeks (this was about three years ago), I was fuzzy on what it meant - not realizing that would be a hallmark of the OSR itself up until the present.  I believe I kept calling it Old School Revolution.  Then, a month or so later I guess someone clued me in to the word Renaissance.  Intervening years have brought up Revival, Rules, Roleplaying, and probably a half-dozen others.

Maybe it's me.  Yes, it could very easily just be me, but I can't get past the fact that we don't have a universally recognized name.  I mean... it's the name.  It's in the title, for godsakes!

Let's not even get into what the OSR movement means to an individual, let alone the world before we hammer down what the "R" refers to.

I assume there's at least a little bit of consensus out there in cyber-land.  Most of us have come to the OSR later than when it was forged.  At most, a small handful was there actively participating in its origin discussion.

I don't care if we go with their original intent or pick something else.  It would be nice to have something to say when people ask - without being "corrected" by the blogger down the street.  You know, an actual definition of what those letters represent.

On the other hand, it could simply remain a revolving door of "r" words.  Nothing set in stone, subjective, flexible, do as thou wilt shall be the whole of the law.  But if that's the way it's going to be, I think it would be great to have a consensus on that direction.

Obviously, we're not going to get 100% on anything.  We're human, after all.  Nevertheless, I believe it's time to look that "r" square in the eye, deal with it, and move on to greener pastures.  Agree, disagree, just want to put in your two cents?  I want to read what you have to say, so comment!

Like Homophobia but different

It started with a crowdfunding RPG project based on the Chronicles of Gor here.  +James Desborough is behind it.  I found out about it from Tenkar's Tavern here.  +Erik Tenkar is behind that.

Before encountering this post, my only exposure to the Gorean Chronicles was from spending a couple years in the BDSM scene.  Some liked them, others did not.  Yet no one condemned the twisted turn-ons of another.

I met a lot of different people on places like FetLife (online and face-to-face), many of them interested in Dominant/submissive, Master/slave, rape-play, and probably a hundred other things rarely heard of or discussed on non-BDSM websites.

For whatever reason, those into power dynamics get off on pretending that their actually a slave, slave master, sexually forcing themselves on someone, or being sexually forced to do whatever it is they secretly want be doing.

Obviously, if this was actual rape, it would be a criminal act.  However, rape-play is something that millions of consenting adults have participated in for mutual sexual fulfillment.  Why am I even bringing this up?  Well, Tenkar's Tavern has comments describing such a thing (and the people who enjoy it) as nauseating, disgusting, shameful, creepy, dickish, stupid, etc.

Responding to one of my comments, Erik Tenkar said "slavery and rape fantasies are not a 'thing'."

Well, they actually are a thing; things that many healthy, normal consenting adults enjoy.  It may not be your thing (whoever's reading this), but it exists in the world and makes many, many, many people happy.

Like homophobia, it's more or less "fine" if individuals find the particular sexual practices of others revolting in their private thoughts.  Personally, I do not want to think about two dudes getting it on.  However, it would be a different story for me to call attention to a roleplaying game involving gay sex and then trash it because I'm repulsed by those preferences.  Nowadays, that's what the kids call homophobia.  Back when I was a kid, it was considered normal to ridicule or shame those who were different - even beat them up occasionally.  Not so much anymore.  That's a very good thing.
