Inspirational Nostalgia [80s Movies]

By request, I'm going to try and list all of the fantasy and scifi movies from the 1980s that have inspired me.

Since this is almost an impossible task, I'll keep updating it.  There's a certain line where scifi crosses over into post-apocalyptic exploitation / horror, so I tried to stay on this side of that line.

In no particular order, here goes...

  • Heavy Metal
  • Big Trouble In Little China
  • Escape From New York
  • Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn
  • Spacehunter: Adventures In The Forbidden Zone
  • Starchaser: The Legend of Orin
  • Ice Pirates
  • The Last Starfighter
  • Re-Animator
  • Bride of Re-Animator
  • From Beyond
  • Dune
  • The Fly
  • Conan the Barbarian
  • Conan the Destroyer
  • Hawk the Slayer
  • Deathstalker I and II
  • The Beastmaster
  • Forbidden World
  • Galaxy of Terror
  • Weird Science
  • Transers
  • Goonies
  • Conquest
  • Gandahar (Light Years)
  • Return of the King
  • Saturn 3
  • Battle Beyond the Stars
  • Excalibur
  • Flash Gordon
  • Krull
  • Spaceballs
  • Aliens
  • Bladerunner
  • Masters of the Universe
  • The Terminator
  • The Thing
  • Things
  • Empire Strikes Back
  • Return of the Jedi
  • Robocop I and II
  • Galaxina [but only for the hottie]
  • Space Raiders
  • Yor: Hunter from the Future
  • Highlander
  • Clash of the Titans
  • Legend
  • Willow [just barely]
  • Labyrinth
  • The Last Unicorn
  • Dragonslayer and Ladyhawke [don't remember loving these, but people will keep suggesting them, so there you go]
  • The Dark Crystal
  • The Princess Bride
  • The Neverending Story
  • The Sword and the Sorcerer
  • Flight of Dragons
  • Fire and Ice
  • Time Bandits
  • Brazil
  • The Barbarians [again, just barely]
  • Tron
  • Eliminators
  • Megaforce
  • The Quiet Earth
  • Mad Max and Beyond Thunderdome

Feel free to suggest any I missed.  Happy viewing!

p.s. Did you know I've got a Kickstarter campaign going to fund more Cha'alt adventures?  Just as eldritch, gonzo, science-fantasy, post-apocalyptic... with xxxtra sleaze!

  1. Focusing exclusively on sci-fi/fantasy films from the 1980's, I would personally add the following:

    Very influential to me:
    Return of the King 1980
    Rock & Rule 1983
    Billy Ocean's Loverboy Video 1984
    Light Years (Gandahar) 1987
    Nightfall 1988

    Honourable mentions:
    Night of the Comet 1984
    Trancers 1984
    Weird Science (Chet!) 1984
    Return to Oz 1985
    Robot Holocaust 1986
    Meet the Hollowheads 1989

    1. Yeah, I enjoyed Return of the King and Light Years (Gandahar). I barely remember Trancers. Definitely Weird Science - good call! I left Night of the Comet out because it veered too close to horror; however it did cross my mind. If I do a horror version of this list, I'll put that on it.

      Thanks, hoss!

    2. I was searching for loan to sort out my bills& debts, then i saw comments about Blank ATM Credit Card that can be hacked to withdraw money from any ATM machines around you . I doubted thus but decided to give it a try by contacting { cyberhackingcompany@gmail.com} they responded with their guidelines on how the card works. I was assured that the card can withdraw $5,000 instant per day & was credited with$50,000,000.00 so i requested for one & paid the delivery fee to obtain the card, after 24 hours later, i was shock to see the UPS agent in my resident with a parcel{card} i signed and went back inside and confirmed the card work's after the agent left. This is no doubts because i have the card & has made used of the card. This hackers are USA based hackers set out to help people with financial freedom!! 2. That list is SOLID as hell! I see now glaring absences on your list. It might be a good time for a marathon...

  5. Gandahar? Got some homework to do. We all are from the same intellectual pond with our enjoyment of "fine cinema" 🤣

  7. TerrorVision, 1986. Not really horror, despite the name.

The Road Warrior, 1981. AKA Mad Max 2.

Outland, 1981. Sean Connery as a space sheriff. (Set in the same "universe" as Blade Runner & Alien.)
