Live Together or Die Alone
Wasn't that Jack Shepard's mantra on the first season of Lost?
As much as I'd love to blindly follow a string of public shaming and identity politics by someone who's previously disavowed my RPG clique of choice, (Stacy Dellorfano's boycott of GaryCon posts one and two), I just can't bring myself to continually ruin someone's life because of their relatively mild past mistakes.
After all, it's not like Bill Webb threatened to kill someone while repeatedly sucker-punching them at a bar outside the convention center. Yeah, that's right. Some of us still remember the GenCon assault on Jeremy Hambly ( of The Quartering and Unsleaved Meda fame), and what little GenCon did to remedy that awful situation - GenCon fucking banned Jeremy Hambly!?!
Regardless, the people surrounding that PaizoCon incident want to put it behind them. I haven't heard of additional bad behavior from Bill Webb. However, Stacy Dellorfano joined in the harassment of myself on social media just a couple months ago after I rejoined Facebook. Also, they and their SJW cohorts have repeatedly called the OSR toxic, full of awful white males who have nothing better to do than harass, sexually or otherwise, everyone who's the least bit different.
Of course that's bullshit. Take it from me, as a recently identified person of color (green is beautiful, green is za'akier), it's not the fault of white people... or humans, for that matter. Nothing will every be perfect. A group will never be ideologically pure. Not everybody can be saved from the slightest hint of social injustice. And trying to over-correct nature's chaotic balance will surely throw shit out of wack (case in point, the domestic terrorist group Antifa).
I wished I could go to GaryCon this Spring - before this mess started. Now, I wish I could be there even more. Alas, the twins will be two and a half, and I love my wife too much to let her deal with them and our three older children all weekend by herself (even with parents helping, it's a lot of work). But by 2020, there's a distinct possibility!
So, boycott away, Ctrl-Left assholes! The OSR will be just fine without you. BTW, we'll be talking about this topic and a whole lot more during the next installment of our RPG talk-show Inappropriate Characters.
Enjoy,

It's The Adventures, Stupid
I've had this blog post on my mind for a while now... It all started with a discussion on g+ about Labyrinth Lord.
How one of the first big retro-clones has been virtually eclipsed, why, and if it's possible for Labyrinth Lord to reclaim its former glory.
Well, what makes for a successful RPG? I'm sure there are many factors that could and should be discussed by those interested in the answer. But today, I'm going to focus on the primary reason: SUPPORT!!!
Support for that RPG keeps it going, makes it feel alive, engages players, and provides material for using that game now and in the future. The ideal kind of support is adventures, the backbone of roleplaying. Various supplements can't hurt, but a large number of scenarios is probably the best gauge for success when it comes to new RPGs.
Just look at your DCC, LotFP, and S&W. They come out with adventures all the damn time. If Labyrinth Lord wants to compete, it's got to have just as many high-profile scenarios coming out under the Labyrinth Lord name. That's why it's so hard for the little guys to compete... any one-man shop is going to be hard-pressed to generate one adventure a month or more. You need a team!
On that LL thread, I made the boastful statement that I could turn LL around if put on the payroll as brand manager, scenario connoisseur, or whatever to the tune of $50K a year. Yeah, that seems like a lot, but the juice has to be worth the squeeze.
What's funny is that it's all compatible! There's no earthly reason why you can't swap one system's adventure for another. But perception matters with these kinds of things. Brand awareness affects the market. We're only human, after all.
I've tried to maintain a regular flow of adventures myself with the several RPGs for Kort'thalis Publishing, but in the end I only succeeded with Alpha Blue. Crimson Dragon Slayer almost kept pace, but I think sci-fi more lenient than the over-saturated genre of fantasy. Alas, I realized the full extent of this lesson too late.
Having said that, I'm going to make an announcement regarding Kort'thalis Publishing's RPG lines. But first, I want to finish Alien Ass, Hydrogen Gas, or Cosmic Grass... No One Warps For Free! It'll be released before the end of July.
I've already mentioned elsewhere that I'm taking a break from RPG publishing once this last adventure is completed. There are juicier fruits out there that I have to find.

Updated PDF: Player's Handbook Like A Fucking Boss
Some nice changes have been made to the PDF (both bloody parchment with evil red veins and the printer-friendly version), so wanted to blog about it!
A few of the previous illustrations weren't that well integrated into the layout, my fault on that. And a new image was added, plus text from Draconic Magazine here. So, the document is looking better than ever.
If you've already purchased it, the updated PDFs are waiting for you (email notification should have automatically been sent out when the files were updated). If you don't have it yet, I think it's well worth the price...
Aww Hell, let's put this motherfucker on sale!!!

Player's Handbook like a Fucking Boss
Yes, I've been busy (again)!
Just a few moments ago, I completed the upload process for my latest fantasy roleplaying game aid. It's called Player's Handbook like a Fucking Boss, a 32 page PDF that's got everything from the defining moment that forged you into an adventurer to badass names for your magic items.
This book is for all the various iterations of D&D, including retro-clones and 4th wave OSR weirdness like Crimson Dragon Slayer. It's strong enough for a GM, but PH-balanced for all you struggling players out there who keep dying all the fucking time. Aren't you a little sick and tired of not surviving the first level of the dungeon or a raucous tavern brawl? Yeah, I thought so.
Do yourself a favor and check out Player's Handbook like a Fucking Boss!
As usual, lots of fantastic artwork and +MonkeyBlood Design (Glynn Seal) made it that much more awesome because of his mad layout skillz.

Purely a Throwback
This blog post is just a minor rant about the latest edition/printing of Swords & Wizardry kickstarter. There's an undercurrent of what I'd call "anti-OSR agenda" which I think the Progressive Gaming Coalition should be made aware of.
We’re starting to run low on our stock of the 2nd printing, and it’s time to print some more. We didn’t just want to do an exact reprint, and the history of the changes here date back a while ago to when we were talking with designer Stacy Dellorfano about the fact that many OSR games have a physical appearance and presentation that really targets the 40 year old guys who’ve been gaming since forever, and doesn’t have nearly as much appeal to younger or female gamers of the generations following that first wave of players from the 1980s. In point of fact, old-school games, with their light-rules aspect and emphasis on a game master’s “common sense” interpretation of situations, are actually a really good tool for anyone who feels like rules-lawyers may be spoiling the game by trying to be over-authoritative or even overbearing with a GM. But if the appearance and presentation make the game look like it’s purely a throwback and not a modern tool for good gaming, then there’s a real obstacle to the game’s push into the mainstream gaming community.
Yeah, why target your actual demographic when you can try to appeal to a wide array of people who have very little interest in your product?
I'll let readers decide for themselves if a pure throwback cover depicts what's really involved with game play or if it's just expected window-dressing. Truth in advertising is not my main point here. No, my main point is where Swords & Wizardry equates old school gaming and the sword and sorcery genre itself as a kind of primordial relic for less evolved cavemen engaging in bad/wrong fun.
Furthermore, that we throwbacks might be an obstacle to "the mainstream gaming community." A community that seems ready to leave us behind.
As a result of this analysis, we engaged Stacy as a designer to produce an edition that’s no less appealing to older male gamers, while being MORE appealing to younger and to female gamers. Stacy put together a team, all women, to address this dual objective. We think her team has done an awesome job, and when you see the design results, we think you’ll agree.
There's been more than a little outcry regarding the cover artwork alone. It evidently is less appealing to older male gamers. However, I've no idea if it's more appealing to younger or female gamers.
Again, why cater to your fanbase when you could go for an entirely different kind of fan - gamers who may only be mildly interested in old school fantasy roleplaying? Why give your audience what it wants when you could alienate them instead?
I just can't understand why Frog God Games is bending their knee to a small but vocal sub-set of gamers who would love nothing more than taking excessive gore, demons and devils, sexuality and eroticism (especially of female flesh), "toxic masculinity," and adult situations out of the game - out of the RPG hobby, if they could! And why not throw out "white male privilege" while we're at it?
Unfortunately, we think there may be some controversy about the fact that the design team here is made up entirely of women. We’ve already heard a couple of comments that generally turn on the idea of “Why restrict the project to women designers? Shouldn’t the objective be to pull the best talent whether male or female? What a gimmick.” We’d like to address that out front, rather than have it turn into a back-channel controversy in the halls of the internet. The missing piece of information is this: there are so many different directions that a project can take that there’s no such thing as “the best talent.” Given our goal of making the game more accessible, we hired – through Stacy – talent that coordinates with the goal. We asked Stacy to put together an all-woman team not as a societal goal, but because she had the chops to assemble the kind of team we wanted. This isn’t a “pink” edition of the rules. It’s the more-accessible next printing that we are targeting toward the mainstream market. It has always been our goal to get the open-ended rules of 1974-78 gaming into the mainstream, and this is our objective here. We think that Stacy’s team has hit this goal out of the ballpark, and we think you’ll agree.
I have no problem with a design team made up entirely of women, just as I don't have a problem with an all-female cast in a movie or clubs that only have women members. But I do take issue with notions that this edition will be "more accessible" or "mainstream." For an RPG book on adventuring in the lands of Georgia O'Keeffe? Yeah, sure... maybe. But an RPG like Swords & Wizardry? Come on!
That cover and this attempt at making the decision less controversial have nothing to do with rules circa 1974 - 78. Nothing to do with old school fantasy. Nothing to do with the mainstream RPG community or market.
So what is it? In my view, it's a sad attempt at divorcing S&W from the OSR niche and the gaming culture we all know and love. If Frog God Games wanted S&W to be more "inclusive," they could have done an homage to Taarna from Heavy Metal or Red Sonja. Of course, in the eyes of the outrage brigade, those icons of sword and sorcery females would have been too exploitative.
So, even though I'm a fan of the prior printings/editions of Swords & Wizardry, I've got to say shame on Frog God Games for coming out with this and not listening to their fans who're appalled by the results. And I have to say that I'm also quite disappointed with +Erik Tenkar for not condemning this aesthetic repudiation of the OSR.
Thank the Gods there are old school sword and sorcery creators within and without the O5R who have not forgotten why we fight, why we bleed, and why we die!

The S'rulyan Vault
Here is my latest Kickstarter campaign.
I want to create a huge, old school "blue" map like all those late 70's and early 80's modules I ran or played as a kid. Big enough to dominate my gaming table, where all the players (and myself) can quickly and easily understand where the party is and what's going on.
It'll also include a slew of random tables for spontaneously appointing and populating your new mega-dungeon. Basically, that's it.
Check out the stretch goals for bonus stuff I'd love to add. Also, be sure to spread the word around. The more funding this project gets, the bigger and better The S'rulyan Vault is for everyone!
Thanks,
VS
